I have been computing from my boss’ old desktop, circa 1998. It’s been an experience, for sure… but, FINALLY, I was able to go purchase a new laptop. Welcome Betsy, the shiny black PC from Gateway. She may not be a Mac, but she will do until such time as I get the capital together to upgrade.

Hey, so I synched my Twitter followers with Tumblr (the dashboard I use to power my website) and it turns out a ton of you are here… Hi, hello! I followed you, please follow me back, that would be swanky and awesome.

It’s raining buckets here in Chicago and was so cold this afternoon I could see my breath. WTF, weather? Where did summer go? I would like it back.

(Yes, I know summer doesn’t technically start until June 21, thanks Paul Storrie!)

Tomorrow I’m finally seeing The Avengers. I will update you all as to my thoughts after, I’m sure.

I’m also stopping by one of the various LCS’s I frequent to pick up Vol 4 of Locke & Key, which I have been reading the trades of for a month or so (as I can afford them). It’s easily the best comic series I’ve read in years. I might grab Incorruptible Vol 2, too - also a good one.

Short weeks are weird, aren’t they? This week has been crazy and not that awesome. It’s especially kind of icky because technically I think I only get one day off this weekend… as I have to observe a test class for World Tapas cooking at 11am on Sunday. 11am… Sunday… blern.

After the class I am probably going to take myself to the movies. I may invite a friend who I was supposed to hang with earlier this week (but couldn’t due to other circumstances) but I am not counting on their participation, as they are feeling poorly… Regardless, I am going to go see THIS. Looks awesome.

This is the beginning of a “Kate Enrichment Period,” (clearly, as I’m going to see two movies in so many days) - that being the case - either this coming Wednesday or the one following, I am taking myself to see Felt at IO Chicago. Hopefully Dex will be able to come with me, but it’s dependent on his roller derby practice schedule. Yeah, Dex bouts in RD, pretty awesome, right?

Here’s why: Up until just now, at age 38, I never just “dated.” Historically, I have had three modes when it came to interactions with (mostly) the opposite sex:

Friend only: You are like my brother, the thought of seeing you naked makes me go “ew.”

Friend I am pining for: You are my friend, and the thought of seeing you naked makes me go “yay!” But I’m usually too socially inept to let you know that I feel this way. It will involve you telling me you feel that way or a massive amount of booze to pry that info out of me.

Friend who has become my boyfriend: I see you naked on a regular basis and probably live with you, too.

Category one is of no consequence to this entry - those are the dudes I’m pals with that I’m never going to date. It’s category two and three which are relevant to my current conundrum. Because the process of getting from category two to category three is not the normal “go out with someone a bunch of times and see what happens” kind of thing… no. Let me give you my three most serious relationships as examples:

Ex-husband - Met him at a bar, had a fling, didn’t talk to him for a month because I lost his number, realized that we knew people in common and got his number from one of those people, called him and talked to him on the phone for three hours, entered into exclusive girlfriend-boyfriend relationship.

My Best Guy Friend T (whom I dated off and on for most of 1999-2000) - Was already friends with T, started spending a lot of time with him, pined after him for six months, drove all my friends crazy with the “should I ask him out, should I not ask him out” crap, on NYE 1998 I basically informed him that he had to kiss me at midnight. He did, it wasn’t a pity kiss, went home, talked until 4am, entered into an exclusive girlfriend-boyfriend relationship.

The Evil Ex, The Paranoid Android - Met him while managing a hostel in New Orleans, became friends, developed crazy crush on the dude, never said a word about it, traded email addresses, exchanged daily emails pouring our hearts out to each other over the course of one year. ONE YEAR. Upon when he came back to NOLA to visit me, we got drunk, he kissed me and told me he was in love with me, we moved in together less than three weeks later.

Do you see the commonality here? There is no “going out on datey-dates, getting to know you” kind of jazz. I mean - with T and The Paranoid Android, I did get to know them as friends before we dated. However the process of going from “friends” to “couple” has been pretty stunted and happened quickly after a mutual sexual desire is admitted.

And, honestly, in retrospect, that was not the smartest way of approaching this subject matter.

After this latest round of heart shredding with The Paranoid Android (which - one year to the date - I feel mostly healed from) I decided that I was going to dip my toe into the dating pool again… but, dip the toe, not jump in head first w/out checking to see if there is any water in the pool first.

The problem is, I have no context for how dating is supposed to work. Okay, so you go out on a first date, and you like the person, so what do you do then? Rinse, repeat - I guess?

The whole affair makes me feel gangly and awkward like a stupid teenager.

I’ve been out on a number of first dates in the couple of months and it’s been… eh… okay. There have been a couple of guys I’ve been interested in seeing on a more regular basis, but my communication of that desire has lead to the “Woah, lady - we only went out on two dates, I’m not interested in a relationship yet/ever…”

Even though that wasn’t what I said, what I said was “I’d like to see you again, possibly more regularly and see what happens.”

I don’t -CAN’T- go from zero-to-relationship in 60 seconds anymore, every time I have done that I have ended up having my heart destroyed by someone six months, two years, four years, TEN years later.

The thing is that I feel like I’m being very upfront and open about what I want, but for some reason, it’s coming across all dribbling and moronic “guhhhh, I likey, be my boyfriend please!”

Which is not my intent.

Emotionally, all I can handle at the present moment is someone who I enjoy hanging out with immensely and whom I have some sort of urge to see naked. From there I need things to happen slowly, over the course of time… But, that’s not what is being heard when I say that.

So what do I do? I try to be all coy, flirty, light hearted “come shag me, then get the fuck out” Kate and STILL I come off like a spaz and I’m trying too hard.

Here in which lies the irony: I can give great dating advice to other people, yet I -myself- cannot take my own advice and am shit at dating. Meg says I remind her of a line from Alice in Wonderland “I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it.”

And, I don’t know how to change that.

This looks pretty awesome (and free), perhaps I will be driving...

This looks pretty awesome (and free), perhaps I will be driving a zip car to check it out.

Friday, WonderWomanV2 and I did mundane things (groceries, laundry) and stayed close to Chez Kate. Meg made yummy dinner, we watched Sherlock S2, E3 (The Richenbach Fall, mirrored after Doyle’s The Final Problem.) I think I may be a little in love with Andrew Scott’s Jim Moriarty (he just won a BAFTA, so my love/lust isn’t singular). So evil, so crazy! I’m anxious for Series 3 to begin. Hopefully, I’ll have a new ‘puter then so I can Torrent it and watch it much sooner than I did Series 2. Either that or I’m going to have to get my friend Kyle to show me how to setup a proxy which will allow me to stream the BBC.

Saturday, my pal Dexter came into the city for adventures filled with hilarity at the Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival (the first street fest of the year) and the L&L Tavern (my favoritest dive bar in Chicago, one of the bartenders -Tom- looks just like Commissioner Gordon, ala Gary Oldman). Love the L&L for their cheap beer ($2.50 PBR long necks, the friend of the broke writer girl) and their free jukebox filled with all sorts of excellent punk-new wave-alt indie goodness from the 70s forward. Given that Dex and I started drinking beer (on empty stomachs) at 2:30pm and I didn’t get home until around 11:00pm, I was amazed at the level of sober I actually ended up - though I was pretty damn silly for much of the day. I also developed a massive crush on the lead singer for a pop-cover band named ‘Stache! (mostly b/c he was tall and wore a stripey shirt and seemed pretty geeky and jumped around a lot. Not that I talked to him or anything, not that I will, because he is wildly age in-appropriate for me. I am no cougar, damnit!)

Have I mentioned I’m ridiculous? I should do that now. Hey innerwebs, I’m ridiculous. Like you didn’t know.

Sunday, Meg and I met Susie Young at the beach for grrls beach day. It was fun, I got too much sun and got slightly sick as a result and had to skip my Uncle’s yearly BBQ in Evanston. Still a good day.

Monday, an unexpected funday. I wasn’t sure if I had to work today or not, so I texted my boss at the usual starting time to ask if we were working today, to which he replied “No, just make sure to check in on things.” RIGHT! With that I promptly went back to sleep and slept until 1:30pm. It was GLORIOUS. I have been mostly laying around the rest of the day, reading my book, perusing the innerwebs and chatting w/friends via text/IM. Perfect end to a pretty damn good weekend. Oh yeah, and it’s raining buckets, hence the title of my post. I am now going to finish this post up, finish chatting w/my friend Ethan and then put myself to bed, as I noted from my work calender (see, I DID check in) that my day tomorrow is pretty nutastic.

See ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya!

***Caption of Andrew Scott pic should be “No, thank YOU Andrew Scott for being so damn yummeh!” Thx to whomever I borrowed it from.

Memorial Day thanks...

Today is Memorial Day and I’d like to quickly give thanks to the men and women who serve our country at home and abroad. As a result, I’ve been on a downloading rampage over the last four weeks. As such I’ve created a playlist of new (to me) songs I’m obsessed with. Which I’m listening to right now, which I’m sharing with you… Some are old (mostly old), some new, some borrowed… wait… oh hell, here’s the list:

Gotye, Somebody I Used to Know (Meg and I listen to this song at least fourteen times each day)

Lady Antebellum, Need You Now (yes, I’m a closet country fan - sometimes)

Beach House, Lover of Mine

They Might Be Giants, I Palindrome I (an oldie, but goodie)

Lit, My Own Worst Enemy (reminds me of the summer of 1999, “making out with rockstars” and adventures w/Lynette Jensen)

Scissor Sisters, Take Your Mama (reminds me of spring 2004 and my lovely Lou & David)

Weezer, The Sweater Song (reminds me of spring 1998 & my friend Pinky’s big ass beater car)

The Decemberists, The Mariner’s Revenge Song (interesting note, this murderous song is my two-year old nephew’s favorite song EVER. That’s Aunt Katie’s boy!!)

Emilie Autumn, Fight Like a Girl

Blogger. In the WORLD.

Holy f-balls, people - is it really true that I haven’t updated this dang blog since November 2011? Derp.

A lot has happened between now and then. Here’s the short summary, along with a promise that I’ll be better about updating this blog with my rambling thoughts, etc. —

What Kate Has Been Doing While NOT Blogging:

In late November I took on a full time gig working for a startup company called I Wish Lessons. I’m in charge of their recruiting, staff management and corporate communications (ie: HR & PR). This has kept me stupidly busy, working about 60-80 hours per week. I telecommute, so it’s not that bad - I am currently working (theoretically) and doing so in my jammies.

Elliott and I are still plugging away at writing Keep Your Pants On (the geeky dating column for Bleeding Cool) - after a shockingly successful panel at C2E2 in March, El and I have turned this column into a podcast. (You can listen to Episode #0 by clicking HERE.) We have a dedicated Twitter now (@KeepYoPantsOn) and Facebook fan page. You should follow us, our banter is legendary.

I was recently interviewed as a “Kate of Interest” for The Kate Book, a blog dedicated to everything which is Kate. How awesome is that? (Read the interview by clicking HERE.)

I’ve been on Geek Girl on the Street Reports hiatus (due to crazy work stuff), but am about to send Rich Johnston the first of a new series of columns from me. Let the insanity begin!

I’m still plugging away on my graphic novel, waiting for contract from my mysterious publisher. I have attached an artist to the project (Thom Zahler, woo!) and we’re hoping to get the contract stuff sorted out sometime soon so we can begin work on the series in earnest. In the meantime, I’ve written a pretty coy little FCBD issue titled “Max Tango Canine Private Eye Meets Sherlock Hound.” Aren’t I a clever girl?

Speaking of new projects: I also started work on an original webcomic titled “Platonic Life Partners” which is going to be illustrated by none other than my darling WonderWomanV2. I don’t want to reveal too much of what it’s about until such a time as we’re ready to launch it, but it’s fun…

SPEAKING OF MEG: She’s back from France, yay! And, she’s camping out with me for much of the summer at Chez Kate. It’s like summer camp-meets-the dorms-meets geek girl central. <3

Speaking of Chez Kate: In December I moved into my own apartment, sans roomies - it’s AWESOME.

I’m kind of, sort of, trying to date. It’s going… eh. Thank goodness I have Manfriend (my FWB for the last half a year or so) hanging around to stroke my ego and other bits. Haaaa! Oh, the irony of the fact that I write a dating advice column and am total and complete shit at actually dating… ! That’s a topic for another post, though.

Other than these things, not much going on here… more updates soon, I swear. Hope y’all are groovy!

And, we're back!

Gah, I’m a terrible blogger. I apologize, Internet, for being such a slacker over the last few months. To be quite honest: I’ve been stupidly busy with a day job (writing) and working on my graphic novel. This has led to little time and little desire to blog and/or maintain this site.

But, things are starting to relax now, so you’ll see more content from me coming soon. For one - KYPO over on BleedingCool.com will be starting up again next week, as will Geek Girl on the Street Reports.

I also have some interesting quasi-personal things I want to write about on this site in the near future. So stay tuned…

In the meantime, I leave you with this amusing photo which marries two of my favorite things (Doctor Who and LOLCats) to give you the Friday lol:

Event Shout-Out: National Association of Professional Women Midwest Conference on 11/18

Hey y’all - remember last week when I gave the shout-out to Ms. Career Girl Connect this Thursday and I talked about the importance of networking? I also mentioned I was doing public relations for a great group which was holding a Chicago area conference *the-very-next-day* after MCGC?

Yup well this post is about them: I’ve been working with the National Association of Professional Women to publicize their 1st Annual Midwest Conference in Naperville this coming Friday. NAPW is a national organization which is designed to empower women for professional success. While it’s targeted at mainly those in marketing and sales, NAPW has something to offer and teach all professional women about leveraging “assets” (not what you’re thinking, you pervy monkeys!) they already have (expertise, contacts, skills) to create meaningful business relationships. I know that in the short time I’ve been working with them, I’ve even had my skill-set sharpened (as I’ve had to start thinking again about writing in a completely different way than I do when writing about pop-culture funness like comics and Doctor Who and geek dating).

Here is what our buddies at GeekMom said about NAPW:

“The National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) is a group whose goal is to help professional women overcome those challenges. This nationwide organization holds meetings and events across the country through local chapters and gives women the chance to meet professionals both online and in person to support and encourage their professional success.”

(Thanks Nicole!)

If you’re in the Chicago area and are interested in attending, you can register here: http://www.napwmidwest.com/

If you’re a journalist or blogger and are interested in attending, if you write about the event before Friday or pinky-swear you’ll write about the event FROM the event via your blog or Twitter, you can even attend for free… Granted this is only open to the first five bloggers to hit me up via email.

Plus there will be swag. I know how you jokers love swag. This stuff is GOOD STUFF (including a cashmere scarf courtesy of J. Hillburn, which if you don’t want, I’ll happily divest you of.)

Event Shout-Out: Ms. Career Girl Connect on Nov. 17th

So, one of the things about being a freelance writer (and freelance communications professional - PR, marketing and content services available for reasonable rates, hit me up via email if you’re interested) is that you CONSTANTLY have to be networking to get your next job.

This means I attend a lot of press events and networking cocktail hours, coffee sessions, dinners, lectures, etc. Armed with a stack of business cards, you never know when you’re going to meet the person who is going to connect you with your next job.

Recently I’ve become aware of an AWESOME site: Ms. Career Girl, run by Nicole Crimaldi, is a blog and educational resource for business women across a variety of career segments - helping women to refine their ideas for small businesses via an incubator, get employed via career coaching and connect with other Chicago-area business women to create business relationships with tangible benefits.

Next week Ms. Career Girl is hosting a “Ms. Career Girl Connect” networking event at Proof Chicago (networking is always best done in a cocktail setting, IMHO) where the following panelists will be speaking about how to use social media to boost your sales around the holidays:

Blagica Bottigliero, Global Director of Social Media at Motorola Mobility

Leah Jones, Account Director of Emerging Media at Olson PR

Cait Weingartner, Senior Engagement Specialist at Aspen Marketing Services and founder of PrettyandFun.com

Nicole Crimaldi, Marketing Consultant and founder of MsCareerGirl.com

Further, there will be free food and complimentary champagne:

Food provided by Chicago’s top food trucks!

Homage Street Good

Gaztro Wagon

Tamalie Foodie

Ste Martean Vegan Food truck

Mama Green’s Gourmet Goodies

Complimentary champagne and cash bar!

Pickup tickets via Eventbrite: http://mcgconnect.eventbrite.com/

Sadly, I won’t be able to attend as I’ll be prepping for the NAPW Midwest Conference the next day (which I am doing PR for, more on this tomorrow) — but, I’ll be there in spirit, for sure.

(FYI - this is why 2011 has been one of the hardest business years for me ever, as I have had to miss two HUGE networking events due to family obligations - San Diego Comic Con and NYC Comic Con - my work has suffered immensely. If any of you youngin’s out there were wondering how important those events are, I’m just saying - 50% of my business comes from attending those two shows.)

What I'm listening to and other stuff:

You know what the library has in addition to books and DVDs? Music… lots and lots of music, surprisingly good and hip music. Also cheesy music, that only I like… Here’s what I have in my CD player right now (some are mine, some are property of the library…)

The Scott Pilgrim vs. The World soundtrack — WE ARE SEX-BOB-OMB AND WE ARE HERE TO WATCH SCOTT PILGRIM KICK YOUR TEETH IN!

Chris Cornell, Euphoria Morning — a throwback to 1999 and driving around in the blue rollerskate of doom with Tony.

All Caps, Lowercase — Kowabunga, dude!

Kirby Krackle, Kirby Krackle — I bet it’s hard to join the rest with fanboys staring at your chest.

Mmm, dreamy late-90s Chris Cornell… :)

Other than that, not much new… still being a broke-ass, but doing it in style. Had a great interview with an innovative advertising agency yesterday (LimeGreen), hopefully I’ll be joining their team soon! Doing some freelance/contract pr work for the National Association of Professional Women… on a tight time frame, but doable and it’s really testing my ability to work under pressure. Fun stuff.

Back to writing KYPO on Bleeding Cool, you can see my solo column here: A Tale of Two Dates

Will be back writing GGotS Reports next week.

Until then… l8r, sk8rs!

Books I have read in October:

Since I’m broke and don’t have the Internets at home (or cable, for that matter) I have been reading at the pace of about three books per week. Here is a list, in no particular order, of what I’ve read in the last month and my brief thoughts on each title.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman — This was the spring 2011 “One Book, One Chicago” selection and I actually had never read it before. I really enjoyed Richard Mayhew’s tale, which was really no surprise as I like Gaiman’s other books, such as American Gods. Though I found the eventual unraveling of the mystery of Door and the execution of her family a little anti-climatic and predictable. I was willing to overlook that because the meat in the middle of the book was so wonderfully written.

Finny by Justin Kramreon — For the most part, I enjoyed this book. I found the 20+ year relationship between Finny and Earl quite compelling, almost an allegory for a relationship I’ve had with a particular man for half as long. The end made me cry. However, I felt like the character of Judith was somewhat unnecessary. And, at times I felt like the book changed voices (first to third) unpredictably, which caused me to be jarred out of the story. It was pretty clear this was a first novel (a fairly good one at that) - so I’ll look forward to seeing what Justin Kramron produces next… hopefully holding onto the charming aspects he has nailed already as a writer and improving upon where his structuring could really use some solid foundation work.

Smokin’ Seventeen by Janet Evanovich — Light, fluffy, predictable. I enjoy the fact that you can pick up any Stephanie Plum mystery and be caught up on who Stephanie is, what has happened in books previous and what is currently happening in her life within the first chapter. I mostly read this because Joan Hilty suggested that perhaps Evanovich would be wise to turn her varied series into graphic novels to grab a female audience… and, honestly I’d not read her work until that came up, so I was curious.

The Last of the Savages by Jay McInerney — A disappointing, fairly predictable, Holden Caufield-esque novel from an otherwise talented writer. Don’t bother.

An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin — This was a re-read. I read it when it came out last fall and was disappointed in it. I wanted to give it a second chance, because I thought I might have been predisposed to dislike it by having recently read Shopgirl. But, no, it was still not very good. Felt like Martin was phoning it in. Which he’s entitled to do… but… yeah I was a little bummed I spent $25 on the hardback of the book.

On Writing by Stephan King — Another re-read, I think that writers or anyone interested in becoming a writer should read this book at least once per year. The autobiography portion of the book holds up to being interesting the second time around, and the writing advice is interesting to look back on after a whole year of trying to apply said advice to your craft. A+ non-fiction, go buy it now.

States of Confusion by Paul Jury — Jury, a Northwestern film school graduate, struggles to find himself while on a 48 states in 48 days roadtrip across America. I tore through this book (I started it last night and I finished it around noon this afternoon.) It’s funny, insightful, annoying in the way that 23-year old type-A overachievers (like my brother, Matthew - this book TOTALLY reminded me of him) can be and a pretty fun read. I hope Jury writes more. I enjoyed the hell out of this book.

Up next: The Fall 2011 OBOC title, The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellows. I’ve heard from a reliable source that this book is dry and humorless, but we’ll see… I’ll give it a shot.

Kate on LinkedIn

Kate on LinkedIn:
Despite rampant rumors, I’m not dead. Just been dealing with some crunchy personal stuff lately and haven’t been writing much. However, new with me is this: I am looking for a “day job” because I’m sick of being broke (and just learned that Wizard is discontinuing the weekly feature they hired me in August to write. Boo, Wizard. No wonder people complain about working for you.) Ergo, here is my updated LinkedIn Profile link. If y’all hear of anything… let me know. Look for columns from me on Bleeding Cool and the GGN starting again next week. xoxo, KK

Wizard World Digital - Daily Dozen

Wizard World Digital - Daily Dozen:
I am one of the feature writers on WWD’s new Daily Dozen feature. So far “Awesome Superheroes That Don’t Get the Spotlight” and “Titles That Should Be On Your Pull List” are mine… keep an eye out for more content by me later this week/month.

David Tennant in eyeliner makes me swoony…

David Tennant in eyeliner makes me swoony…

Geek Girl on the Street Reports: Joan Hilty on Being a Woman at DC Comics

Geek Girl on the Street Reports: Joan Hilty on Being a Woman at DC Comics:
#2 of 5 in the first set of interviews with women in comics for Bleeding Cool. Here’s a short summary of what’s been going on with me…

I’ve been heads down working on two projects right now. First, I’ve been trying to get into the swing of writing the Daily Dozen feature for Wizard World Digital. This is a new gig that I got via my pal, Ethan Kaye. It’s basically what it sounds like — writing lists of cool shit to publish on a daily basis. I like it, it’s fun, the best part? When they pay me the money.

The other project I’ve been working on is a series of interviews with women in the comics industry for Bleeding Cool. Last week the first of about ten of these interviews ran (with Louise Simonson, link in the post immediately below) and this week an interview with former DC editor, Joan Hilty is going to run. This is blending itself into the panel I’m mod’ing at Geek Girl Con in a few weeks… it’s exciting stuff with the potential to turn into a book or something not far off on the horizon.

And, of course, Elliott and I are still plugging away on the geeky-dating advice column which is KYPO. We had two columns run last week: One about friends with benefits and one about the horrible anti-geek Gizmodo article which blew up the net last week…

I’ve had some changes to the landscape of my personal life recently, too. Don’t really want to talk about it, so I’m not going to - but suffice it to say that I’ve been a little down in the mouth in recent weeks. HOWEVER: That is about to change, as one of the people I love the most - Dave - is coming to visit me this weekend. I haven’t seen him in way-fing-too-long. I am giddy at the thought of spending a weekend with him getting up to no good (because that is what we do). There are burlesque and roller derby plans in the work. Plus I imagine a goodly amount of time will be spent dicking around Chicago…

Following Dave’s visit I will be bivouacking to Ohio for my nephew’s FIRST BIRTHDAY. Craziness, right? I’ll be hunkered down at the parental’s until the 25th, then back to Chicago — then to Seattle for Geek Girl Con and NYC for NYCC, respectively. THEN back to Ohio for Mid-Ohio Comic Con. Then I am going to curl up in the fetal position and take a long-ass nap.
