Bullet Points of Life: Unicorn Star, a mention in the RedEye and Bleeding Cool (omai!)

  • Heroes in Disguise, the Geek Girl on the Street fundraiser to benefit the Heroes Initiative is coming up this Friday at Challengers Comics. If you’re in Chicago and would like to come, please hit me up via email kate AT katekotler DOT com and I’ll put you on the VIP list. There will be free booze and schwag (or SWAG as my friend Verne insists…)
  • I’ve been running around like a chicken with my head cut off getting things ready for the event, this included picking up tee shirts donated by Threadless… there’s going to be one in every schwag/swag bag… Lance at Threadless was great to give us a wide assortment of geeky themed shirts, the one I’m most excited about is  Retold With Unicorns (which is Star Wars retold with Unicorns.) I *may* set one aside for myself, it depends on how many VIP reservations we end up having.
  • My pal Elliott Serrano wrote up the event today on his Chicago RedEye blog, Geek To Me: Comic Book Fans Assemble for the Hero Initiative (I won’t tell you all what I had to do for the coverage… let’s just say “Yard Tardis.”)
  • And, finally - I have a really interesting column running this week on Bleeding Cool (I think it will run tomorrow, I’m not sure…) It deals with the “Curious Case of the Man From Space…” I’ll link up when it is live. The title will make sense when you read the article. I’m unsure as to the reaction I’ll get from the BC peanut gallery - it’s always a crap shoot with that lot. Huh.
  • Speaking of BC - I went back through some of my comments on my previous columns today and I came across a couple choice ones… My favorites were “The gauntlet is down, Rich has to choose now, it’s either Adorkable Grrl or us.” And, “She lists Bleeding Cool on her resume, god help her if anyone ever asked us for references.”  Both these comments show a general disconnect with how the world really works.
  • Just to clear up some of the confusion as to the importance of those denizens of the BC forums - so long as my articles get a response, either positive OR negative - I suspect Rich isn’t going to axe my column. It is my job to elicit a response via my writing and (honestly) I don’t always craft articles expecting to be praised for them. While it is tiresome (and a bit hurtful) to read comments where people are attacking me professionally and personally, when people say they hate either me (as an online personality,) what I’ve written or the way I’ve written it shows that I’m doing my job and doing it well.
  • Further, I’m a professional, paid, print PUBLISHED writer - I seriously doubt that editor/publisher who is considering hiring me for a gig is going to contact forum rats to ask them for a reference. To think that would happen is just delusional…
  • And, now that I’ve poked the hornets nest of BC (seriously, it is so easy to wind y’all up, it isn’t even that fun anymore) I’m gonna say *SMOKEBOMBNIMOUT*
