Recently I used the phrase “monkeys might fly out of my butt” in relation to agreeing with someone who normally I disagree with in the comments of my Bleeding Cool articles… Another reader posted this image in the comment section, I find it hilarious… Nice to know the Green Arrow has my back… :P

Skepchick: Update, Plus Dating Advice by Rebecca Watson
If you haven’t been following this sitch, you should be - it is a prime example of how women are treated differently than men on these here innerwebs. In short: Rebecca Watson is a really smart, sassy woman philosopher (founder of Skepchick.com) — not so long ago, she was speaking at a skeptics convention about how to make women feel more welcome in the skeptic community, to which she encouraged people NOT TO sexualize women before speaking to them/hearing their thoughts… Common sense, right? I guess not so much - because following her speaking engagement and holding discourse on this topic in a bar (until 4am) some guy (who had been present both at the lecture and hotel) cornered her in the elevator of her hotel and asked her back to his room… This, of course, was a guy who had NEVER SPOKEN TO HER prior to that moment. Following this, Watson made a pretty innocent remark via a YouTube vlogcast, describing what happened and saying “Hey, you want more women in the skeptics community? Then don’t do that.” And, as it is wont to do, the Internet exploded with vitriol, anger and misogynistic calls for Watson’s head on a platter… Including shitty comments from physicist Richard Dawkins. (WTF, seriously, Richard?) All-in-all, the response to her remark is pretty indicative of how women are treated differently than men in any (and most) Internet communities. This is her follow-up to the first vlog and I have to say, it’s f-ing brilliant! Kudos! My favorite quote from the comments is “Women are people. Treat them like people, not like potential cum-dumpsters.” It defies logic that this statement isn’t common sense. [Thanks to Lynne and Paul Taylor for telling me about this story…]
Right To Reply: Man From Space, Is There A Fallacy In The Galaxy?
Marc James Michael Jackson replies to my column about his online antics and The Man From Space (his webcomic.) Four comments in on the forum and someone has already turned it into an excuse for them to say that they think my writing is “shit.” (Quite literally.) I’ll be interested to monitor the comments throughout the day…
Geek Girl on the Street Reports: A Girl’s Guide To Surviving San Diego Comic Con
Some simple tips to ensure your survival of San Diego Comic Con International. Though some may criticize that these are things “you’d do at any comic con” I believe they bear repeating. SDCC is its own brand of crazy, not like attending any other con (other than NYCC) and if you’ve never been to a big entertainment expo, these may not be as common sense as one might think…

Even though the title is really close to my now infamous 2006 “Geek Girls Need Love, Too” short story… Doesn’t matter, I’d pay $$ to see Nathan Fillion read the phone book. Yum!
Shuffle + Synopsis Challenge | Nathan Fillion, John Krasinski, and Kristen Bell | asked by jessbakescakes | song: Nerdy Girls Need Love Too - Amy Lee Radigan.
so I’m hoping you can love me for the nerdy girl I am.
NERDY GIRLS NEED LOVE TOO…
When Charlotte Mason’s (Bell) longtime boyfriend Danny (Krasinski) dumps her, after a big fight about how he wanted her to control her nerdiness, Charlotte buries herself further into her nerdom. On a whim she signs up for an online dating website, filling her profile with various stats of herself like: “Owns every cat suit from Julie Newmar’s to Miss Berry’s” and “If you let me ride your TARDIS, I’d go beserk”. When she gets an e-mail from it, she’s kind of shocked. However, Tyler Grant (Fillion) seems to be the type person she’s been looking for. After all, Nerdy Girls Need Love Too…

Geek Girl on the Street Reports: The Curious Case of the Man From Space
Rich is so right… don’t read the comments. :P Coincidentally, it is Marc Jackson’s birthday today. Your welcome, Marc - gift wrapped just for you. Heh.

Bullet Points of Life: Unicorn Star, a mention in the RedEye and Bleeding Cool (omai!)
Heroes in Disguise, the Geek Girl on the Street fundraiser to benefit the Heroes Initiative is coming up this Friday at Challengers Comics. If you’re in Chicago and would like to come, please hit me up via email kate AT katekotler DOT com and I’ll put you on the VIP list. There will be free booze and schwag (or SWAG as my friend Verne insists…)- I’ve been running around like a chicken with my head cut off getting things ready for the event, this included picking up tee shirts donated by Threadless… there’s going to be one in every schwag/swag bag… Lance at Threadless was great to give us a wide assortment of geeky themed shirts, the one I’m most excited about is Retold With Unicorns (which is Star Wars retold with Unicorns.) I *may* set one aside for myself, it depends on how many VIP reservations we end up having.
- My pal Elliott Serrano wrote up the event today on his Chicago RedEye blog, Geek To Me: Comic Book Fans Assemble for the Hero Initiative (I won’t tell you all what I had to do for the coverage… let’s just say “Yard Tardis.”)
- And, finally - I have a really interesting column running this week on Bleeding Cool (I think it will run tomorrow, I’m not sure…) It deals with the “Curious Case of the Man From Space…” I’ll link up when it is live. The title will make sense when you read the article. I’m unsure as to the reaction I’ll get from the BC peanut gallery - it’s always a crap shoot with that lot. Huh.
- Speaking of BC - I went back through some of my comments on my previous columns today and I came across a couple choice ones… My favorites were “The gauntlet is down, Rich has to choose now, it’s either Adorkable Grrl or us.” And, “She lists Bleeding Cool on her resume, god help her if anyone ever asked us for references.” Both these comments show a general disconnect with how the world really works.
- Just to clear up some of the confusion as to the importance of those denizens of the BC forums - so long as my articles get a response, either positive OR negative - I suspect Rich isn’t going to axe my column. It is my job to elicit a response via my writing and (honestly) I don’t always craft articles expecting to be praised for them. While it is tiresome (and a bit hurtful) to read comments where people are attacking me professionally and personally, when people say they hate either me (as an online personality,) what I’ve written or the way I’ve written it shows that I’m doing my job and doing it well.
- Further, I’m a professional, paid, print PUBLISHED writer - I seriously doubt that editor/publisher who is considering hiring me for a gig is going to contact forum rats to ask them for a reference. To think that would happen is just delusional…
- And, now that I’ve poked the hornets nest of BC (seriously, it is so easy to wind y’all up, it isn’t even that fun anymore) I’m gonna say *SMOKEBOMBNIMOUT*
